The version of the HDA driver in the Ubuntu kernel is newer than 1.0.11
even, so your efforts are wasted (I didn't adjust the string displayed
in /proc/asound/version since not all drivers are newer than 1.0.10rc3).
I just installed linux-headers-$(uname -r) and build-essential. Then I
downloaded the alsa-driver 1.0.11 tarball from upstream's ftp site.
Afterward I untarred the alsa-driver tarball and invoked:
$ ./configure --with-oss=yes --with-sequencer=yes --with-
kernel=/lib/modules/2.6.15-25-686/build --with-cards=usb-audio
then
$ make
It compiled successfully as a test.
Closing this bug report, since it's clearly a local issue.
