Under Slackware, Xorg 6.9 didn't have such a bad memory use. Going to 5.10 Ubuntu, Xorg 6.8's listed memory went up (and my computer touched swap a lot more). Dapper's Xorf 7.00 fixed this some, but a recent upgrade to a Xinerama setup has made the situation a whole lot worse. Top will show that between Kopete, Mozilla, FireFox, and Thunderbird, I'll have about 287mb of RAM used. Xorg will be consuming 1.2gb! Xrestop shows that Mozilla shares 250mb of pixmaps. Closing FireFox, Thunderbird, etc, removes them from the xrestop listings, but Xorg itself still consumes multiple gigabytes of RAM:
