I found that the USB key stopped working after I used the "system upgrade" option of the update manager.
lsmod showed usb-storage module not present. After I modprobed it, the usb LED lit up in the appropriate sequence of flashes, but I did not find it mounted. Suspicion: update was run without USB key in place and the modules and support were not installed and/or configured. As I needed USB storage very badly, I reinstalled from Dapper CD and it now works. Machine is an IBM 300 GL (600 MHz Intel P3).
