probably a sound driver problem.)
I run Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (dapper) on a Averatec 3280 laptop with VIA 8235
sound. Most of the time when I boot directly into Linux (Ubuntu) the
sound is muted, and I can not unmute it with the Volume Applet 2.14.2,
using either the VIA 8235 mixer or the OSS mixer. The system is set up
to dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu. Normally if I boot into Windows XP
sound will work; after that, if I reboot into Ubuntu sound does work. At
that point, I can usually reboot into Ubuntu (keeping power on) and
sound will still remain unmuted.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Boot the system and choose Ubuntu Linux
2. Insert an audio CD and try to play it with Sound Juicer; or run
System/Preferences/Sound applet and try to play one of the system sounds.
3. Most of the time, the system will be muted and the volume control applet
won't help.
4. Reboot into XP
5. Reboot into Ubuntu
6. Sound will work.
Actual results:
Most of the time, as described above. Generally if I reboot Ubuntu after sound
fails to unmute, sound will still be muted. But once sound is unmuted (after
running XP) it will stay unmuted through reboots of Ubuntu, as long as the
power stays on. Apparently the sound device(s) lose(es) state when the power is
off.
Expected results:
By step 2, I would hear sound from the CD player, or the sound applet.
Does this happen every time?
A large proportion of the time, especially since upgrading to Dapper, though
this was happening to some extent under the 5.10 (Breezy) release, and still
happens if I boot from the Breezy live CD.
