Well, I tried again... The real cause was setting the style used by KDE. Some corrections to the original report: System Settings/Appearance/GTK styles and fonts Setting the options to use the KDE's settings causes abnormal GNOME session.
How to change back: Use the default button in the System Settings/Appearance/GTK styles and fonts tab. (This will set the style to empty style, and a normal font.) Further details: After killing X and returning to GNOME session it cannot load the applets, the Hibernate option does not appear in the log out window. Hope this is enough information.
