Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

To Reproduce:

1. After a Fresh Ubuntu install (using ubiquity) select to mount hda2 etc using
the gui installer (option comes at end of install).
e.g. fstab entry created by ubiquity ----->
 /dev/hda1 /media/winxp vfat defaults,utf8,umask=007,gid=46 0
     0

2. create a samba share of a folder within the drive (hda1 here), this
happens w/o any warning or popups, the share gets added properly (even
though (afaik) samba cannot access mount b/c of permissions)

3. attempt to access your newly created samba mount (which shows up in
nautilus) and get the message that you cannot access the folder and that
the share might have been recently deleted.

NOTE: i attempted to make a sahre from my home folder (which worked...).
that is how i knew there was a access problem to the mount from samba.
after modifying the non-working mount (hda1 here) entry in fstab it
worked (umask=0000 is what i used w/o any other options).

======
Request:
there should at a minimum be an error saying that samba had difficulty
accessing the share (then an experienced user atleast might have known samba
cannot access the drive). the share should not mount w/o error. the better
option would be to either reconfigure samba permissions to be able to read from
these drives or redo default permissions given to drive when mounted at end of
ubiquity installer.

** Affects: samba (Ubuntu)
