Here it happens consistently, all the time, using Ubuntu and Xubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft *Live* CDs (so it's not a problem with a particular install). The problem occurs on both XFCE and Gnome.
After clicking on "Logout", or pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, all the windows and panels disappear - only the wallpaper and the mouse arrow are left on the screen. The mouse arrow still works, but not the keyboard: Caps Lock led doesn't turn on, and I can't switch to another console (Ctrl+Alt+F1,F2,...) or shutdown the X server (pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace). I'm not using any 3D drivers, just an old on-board VGA adapter, so I don't think it's related to nVidia drivers, fglrx or compiz. Everything used to work fine on Dapper. The machine I'm using is an old Athlon 1200+ in a motherboard PC Chips M810-D (the chipset is SIS 740). Mouse and keyboard are USB, but I also tried with standard PS/2. I've disabled ACPI (on BIOS setup, in order to solve USB problems), but it didn't affect the bug.
