I downloaded the Alpha5 ISO and tried it without installing onto hard disk.
The 8.04 installation halted during the splash screen, while this one works! :-)
I mean, I can get to the Ubuntu desktop and test it as a live distro.
With the 8.04 alternate (or was it server? anyway the one with the textual 
installation) I soon had a problem because it said that DVD/CD was not 
recognized and I had to add "all_generic_ide", as specified above, but, with 
that setting, the system was really really slow....
No need to modify the boot options with the 8.10.
I didn't choose to install onto h.d., but I'm quite sure that the problem has 
SOLVED now, with this new kernel.
