I downloaded the Alpha5 ISO and tried it without installing onto hard disk. The 8.04 installation halted during the splash screen, while this one works! :-) I mean, I can get to the Ubuntu desktop and test it as a live distro. With the 8.04 alternate (or was it server? anyway the one with the textual installation) I soon had a problem because it said that DVD/CD was not recognized and I had to add "all_generic_ide", as specified above, but, with that setting, the system was really really slow.... No need to modify the boot options with the 8.10. I didn't choose to install onto h.d., but I'm quite sure that the problem has SOLVED now, with this new kernel. Thanks!
