Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-base

After upgrading to hardy (from feisty) Alsa not able to transfer the audio
signal via the short description like aplay -D hw:0,2, which worked before.
Now I have to give it the full name, like: aplay -D iec958:CARD=CMI8738,DEV=0

This works as I workaround, to get optical sound output:
In my /etc/asound.conf the entry had to be changed from:
pcm.digital-hw {
type hw
card 0
device 2
}
to
pcm.digital-hw iec958:CMI8738
