Hi there I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 with Gnome and I have the same problem! I'm running a Dell Inspiron 8600 1.7GHz with an ATi Radeon 9600 Turbo Pro graphic card. Everything just works fine and I get fine result with the glxgears and fglrxinfo. I haven't setup anything only enabled the 3D and installed Compiz fusion.
When I logout or switch user it's going in black screen and can do anything but push the power button :( It's running fglrx in the xorg.conf. I have tryed to change the fglrx to ati and then it works, but then the 3D isn't working. Some say it's because of the atieventsd.sh script has some wrong file destinations and then locks up. But I'm a newbie here, so don't know anything about it. I don´t know if I run the free og restricted ati driver...it's the one from Ubuntu 8.04 when I installed it. Can I do something to help? Because it's pretty ignoring.
