Stefan said "the fix would change the ghc6 abi". That could be clarified
was to whether *any* fix would do that, or fixing it via upgrading 6.8.3
would do that.

Let me restate Zooko's concern more plainly from a users perspective: Is
there a way to ship a fixed darcs binary, regardless of what happens
with GHC and the Haskell package chain?
