I'm having similar problems, running Kubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04.1. I've installed usbmount, and now my USB memory sticks automount just fine -- except that I don't get any notifications. Systems settings / Notifications / Storage Media Notifications shows the expected triplet of Open in New Window, Download Photos with digikam, Do Nothing.
