Hrm, it does seem like this might be a hardware issue if your system was
running fine and then all of a sudden is showing issues. Do you recall
any specific updates you may have installed between the time it was
working and when it began to fail? Care to maybe test the latest Alpha5
LiveCD for the upcoming Intrepid release - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing
