I have since checked and there is no BIOS update for my motherboard.

The motherboard is relatively new and I've been Linux distro hopping for
quite a while.  This is the first time I've run into anything like this
problem.  I'm willing to tweak the BIOS--which I will do tomorrow and
tell you the results--but my strong feeling is that this is a kernel
issue.  It's also the first time I've used the 2.6.27 kernel and I'm
hoping to avoid that kernel causing me problems.
