Public bug reported:

Sometimes when booting, Ubuntu freezes on the Xorg initialization screen
(black window with progress bar) with a grid-like garbled screen with
vertical banding. It looks almost like the wrong resolution or refresh
rate is set. The Dell D630 laptop appears to be completely locked up
and I can't do anything, including alt+Function to another tty. I have
to hold down the power button until the machine shuts off. On the next
boot, however, it seems to work fine. I haven't been able to pin down
an exact pattern, but it seems like it only happens on a cold boot.

Ubuntu version: 8.10 development branch

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
