** Description changed:
I have a Inspiron 9100 laptop running off an external usb hard drive. I
can use both the keyboard and mouse on the login window, but once I log
in, I am limited to one mouse click (A down-event, but not a up-event.)
I can freely move the mouse before and after my one click. I can't use
keys or key combinations. I can log in on a failsafe command line
session and can do about anything, but a failsafe GNOME session fails. I
also can use an Ubuntu 8.04 live cd without any trouble. I tried
resetting the xorg.conf file and repairing the X server, but none of
that helped. I reinstalled Ubuntu 8.04, but experienced the same
problem. I had been running Ubuntu 8.04 successfully before this, and
did not make any changes to the system before the crash. I don't really
know what else to do because I haven't been using Ubuntu for more than
two months. If you have any suggestions, I will follow them to the best
of my ability. Thank you in advance.
+
+ EDIT: reformatted hard drive and performed clean install. Problem
+ doesn't exist anymore.

+ doesn't exist anymore. It was probably a result of my imported settings
+ from 7.10.
