I've just imported an svg file
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Heckert_GNU_white.svg using file -> import
It appeared fine in firefox and in eye of gnome.
I'd like to note that the svg appears fine through file -> open or by
double-clicking the file
I'll attach the svg and a screenshot
