I've encountered this error as well, and found the solution and posted
it at the thinkpad wiki (under
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installing_Ubuntu_8.04_(Hardy_Heron)_on_a_ThinkPad_R61):
If the above method does not work, restart hal ('sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart')
and check if the modifications are loaded correctly with 'lshal | grep quirk'.
If power_management.quirk.s3_bios is still set to true, try editing
/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/20-video-quirk-pm-lenovo.fdi.
Change
<merge key="power_management.quirk.s3_bios" type="bool">true</merge>
to
<merge key="power_management.quirk.s3_bios" type="bool">false</merge>
on line 9 (under section X60 / X60s / T61 / T61p / R61 / R61s /
X61(s/Tablet) / X300).
