I am having the same problem in my thinkpad T60 which has an ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 card. The problem has happened to me three times and only after the upgrade to the 2.6.24-19-generic kernel in Hardy. Now I am working again only under the 2.6.24-18-generic kernel. I am not totally sure yet if it is a kernel issue, though.
I am using the ATI propietary driver.
