I see the same problem (in Intrepid, but it was also the case in Hardy)
on a Sony Viao laptop with i945GM chipset :

- if desktop effects (compiz) are enabled, when system suspends or
hibernates, it will freeze with a black screen during the process (and
so will not really suspend). Only way out is hard power down.

- if compiz is disabled, everything works fine (suspend, hibernate,
etc.)

- worked fine with deprecated i810 driver on Gusty
