Got the same prob with a ALC882. The .asoundrc suggested by Jean-Francois gives me sound from the digital output as well, but it is a workaround. Nasty to have something like this lurking in there, when the audio stuff in ubuntu is confusing enough as it is.
I'm also a bit surprised that it's such an old bug. Also appears like not a hugely complicated problem for someone who knows anything about this stuff and so on.
