I have a workaround: install Calibri (and related fonts) version 1.0 not 1.02, as per this Ubuntu forums thread: http://ubuntu- virginia.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3945343
This lets Thunderbird display the relevant emails without crashing, and it also fixes rendering within OpenOffice and Abiword. The Calibri font version I had before was presumably incompatible with Ubuntu in some way.
