Sorry about the zip, I'll post plaintext from now on. The model's Samsung LE37S71B - it is a bit older model and is no longer manufactured AFAIK. The most important news is that with most recent radeon driver (from intrepid's repository) the problem went away, the computer boots correctly and the freeze no longer occurs. Even the driver's DRI works, both with XAA and EXA. Many thanks!
