I believe I found a solution of sorts to my problem by consulting
http://manual.sidux.com/en/hw-dev-mon-en.htm In short, after I log in I
can change the resolutions on my laptop monitor and external monitor via
xrandr. However, how do I avoid having to do this manually every time I
use an external monitor?

Also, even though I have turned this bug report into a question, I
wonder. For practical purposes, doesn't this configuration issue amount
to a bug? I'm new to Ubuntu (and really like it). But I don't think it
should take many hours and so much digging to get an external monitor
working. It's not like I'm working with exotic equipment.

Thanks for any help.
