OK, can you send create a sparse e2image dump file of the filesystem, using e2image -r? i.e:
e2image -r /dev/sdb /var/tmp/sdb.e2i You might also want to make a copy of the file, and try running e2fsck on the file. If the USB drive is going bad, it could be that writes aren't reliably making it to the storage device. E2fsck can't do anything if the storage device is unreliable. If that's not it, please bzip2 the sdb.e2i file, and attach it to the bug report.
