I guess one character in your screenshot comes from the Japanese font
Kochi Mincho and the other comes from a Chinese font, because Kochi
Mincho comes before the Chinese fonts in the standard aliases (serif,
sans-serif, and mono) of the default font.conf.

I always create /etc/fonts/local.conf, which is adapted from  /usr/share
/language-selector/fontconfig/zh_CN, to override the default preference
sequence. I am attaching my local.conf for your reference.
