Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release: 8.10

I'm running intrepid, with all available updates by today:
kernel 2.6.27-3
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.5.0-1ubuntu1
xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.9.0+git20080826.a3cc1d7a

The machine is a Thinkpad T42 (2373-R94), with an "ATI Technologies Inc
Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000] (rev 02)".

I'm running KDE4.1.1, using most of the default options.

Whenever I plug an external monitor to the VGA port and run "xrandr" my
system freezes. The same happens if I open krandrtray.

The only log I can get is from dmesg by setting netconsole. This is what
I see every single time I try to run xrandr with an external monitor
plugged:

[ 3547.526689] [drm:radeon_cp_idle] *ERROR* radeon_cp_idle called without lock
held, held 0 owner f5522b00 f55220c0
[ 3547.530090] [drm:radeon_cp_reset] *ERROR* radeon_cp_reset called without
lock held, held 0 owner f5522b00 f55220c0
[ 3547.533574] [drm:radeon_cp_start] *ERROR* radeon_cp_start called without
lock held, held 0 owner f5522b00 f55220c0

I've seen others reporting something like this long before, but not
exactly the problem I'm facing. Maybe someone have a clue.
