Pardon my confusion, I was looking at bug 270325.
On my system, the problem (no gnome session) happens every time.
To get there:
install intrepid alpha-5 from cd
run `apt-get dist-upgrade`
reboot and log in
The problem shows up if and only if gnome-session is updated to 2.23.92.
