I'm quite lost and hope you will please help me.

I'm not super tech savvy.  However, I've never had much trouble opening
documents on my desktop, in my document folders, or when they've been
sent as attachments.  

Suddenly, this problem is stopping me from opening docs on my desk top.
Apparently something was changed to make this happen. You say that I
should not be using Gedit, but should use OpenOffice.org.  I don't know
how Gedit became involved, nor how to unselect gedit and to select
OpenOffice.Org.

Can you advise me, please?
