As far as I know my card is a [AirConn] INPROCOMM IPN 2220. It's the
card which comes with the Acer Aspire 1524. The card isn't supported
under linux but it works through ndiswrapper (see
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/44813 ).

I'm using WEP and I tried it both with the SSID hidden and published. On
the other hand I can connect without a problem if I run iwconfig and
dhclient by hand.

Here's a wild guess. Wireless Assistant asks for a WEP key and offers
the checkbox for an ASCII key. My WEP key is in ASCII. Maybe Wireless
assistant doesn't interpret it as ASCII? It's just an uneducated guess
:)
