This happens/happened to me as well. Alternate CDROM stops ~40% into
base system and wants another CDROM.

Alternate i386 Alpha-4 and Alpha-5.

Desktop Alpha-4/5 i386 is OK (I installed from that). 
Never had problems with Gutsy, Hardy etc. Not seen anything like this before.
