Well, perhaps it is that I owe an apology.

It seems that I was unable to recreate my difficulties testing Alpha5 of
Intrepid, so this got me thinking.

Long story short - a complete clean install solved the problem. Now, I
hadn't done anything bad to the install previously, but it had been 18
months since a clean install - apparently that was too long.

Hopefully this will help someone else.

Oh! And not just a clean install keeping the old /home directory - that
still kept the problems. It required a completely clean install.
