Hello Leann
Thank you for your message and I apologise for the late reply - I was away on
holiday.

My operating system is Daryna Linux Mint 4 (gnome) which uses a Ubuntu
kernel. I have got the sound system working again and as long as I am
careful and make sure the speakers are always turned off before I stop
and start my system, it works ok now. I think that the bug is that if I
forget the speakers and restart the computer with the speakers on, then
the sound system is killed at boot and I have to go back into a terminal
to configure it with command lines.

You request that I install a new kernel.

Is this possible without damaging my Daryna Linux Mint 4 O/S?

I thought that the various programs connected to a specific kernel, and
if I changed the kernel some things like Flash or other programs would
immediately stop working ... and some programs are very difficult to
configure or reconfigure ...

Please let me know if you think I can do install the new kernel that you
request without suffering broken programs?

Yours sincerely

Graham Cunnington

Subject: [Bug 232362] Re: ubuntu does not detect my sound card

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-
image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and
test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer
2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4.
Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced.
You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the
bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please
open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the
2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please
specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26
kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Status in “linux” source package in Ubuntu: New

Bug description:
I have just installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron and none of the players seem to detect
my sound system - that includes Rhythm Box, Totem Movie Player, and also VLC and
Kaffeine, which I have just installed. The video players play video images fine
but without audio.

I am dual-booting on this machine, Debian is on one 40 GB hard drive and
Ubuntu on another 40 GB hard drive, but of course they both use the same
sound card and speakers, and they both use the same Linux media players,
but the Debian media players function and the Ubuntu players don't.

I have no knowledge of how to lead or command my computer to search for
or detect a sound system - the software should be able to do that but it
doesn't.

At this moment I cannot remember what sound card is in this computer,
it's several years old but I know it's working because Debian is uses it
when I play CDs or watch video CDs or DVDs.

NB I wrote "I don't know" because the software will not accept, "All
Media Players." I have just got this reply from you:

"I don't know" does not exist in Ubuntu. Please choose a different
package. If you're unsure, please select "I don't know"

I suppose many of the support staff are Irish ...
