I moved back .gconf, then:

1) edited out the occurence of my theme. tried gdm login. system halt.

2) "mv panel/toplevel panel/toplevel.old". tried gdm login. system halt.

3) "mv panel panel.old". tried gdm login. system halt.

Tried the backtrace you suggested. Gtk-Warning since I am running from
Ctrl-Alt-F1 terminal so it cannot open display (x server I reckon),
program termination. (I am not used to working in a non-GUI environment,
but I am trying my best to provide info).

Given the above outcome, I would not think that it is the panel
directory or any of the contents therein (such as the reference to my
theme) which is at fault.
