Perhaps I'm totally off here, but it sounds like the 810 driver included in Edgy has a major regression that is killing resuming. Edgy ships with 1.6.5, which is identified on the xorg bug tracking page as having this problem. The problem has been fixed in the 1.7.1 release and could possibly be back ported to Ubuntu to fix the huge number of people having this problem.
