Not sure if this is a grub or linux issue affecting linux too.

Please, can you try to reproduce the problem by (re)installing linux-
image-2.6.27-3-generic and attach the files /var/run/grub/menu.lst.ucf-
new and /var/run/grub/menu.lst . Get them just after the failure because
they are deleted when you reboot.
