I have not been able to do any more experimenting with this bug since my laptop fried its own power supply circuitry some time ago - it is still unfixed since I now have a company laptop (which sadly runs WinXP with an incredibly slow boot time) and the repair price is nearly the same as a new (refurb) laptop. If no other users have a similar issue on a similar laptop, might as well close this one...
