I removed the Network Manager applet and didn't use the System -> Admin -> Network (network-admin). Then I run configured /etc/network/interfaces to bring up the wireless interface. This worked for a little while and hung my system. My guess is that it's something with the kernel and drivers. Anyway, another data point.
