The problem seems to be solved now. I got a message from another program
telling me to run sudo apt-get update followed by sudo apt-get install
-f. This has fixed it. But since the update manager is supposed to be
doing basically the same as these commands, I don't quite understand why
that application didn't fix the problem by itself. So I'm leaving the
report open for right now, just in case this shows that something needs
to be fixed about the update manager. If someone who knows a heck of a
lot more about linux than I do thinks that this problem needs no more
attention, then feel free to close it.
