Variation of issue:

I get to the point of loading X server and that fails. Getting message
"Failed to start the X server" and asks if I want to view the X server
output to diagnose the problem with a 'YES', 'NO' tab selectable option.
If I Select YES, here is the information that I get:

X Window System Version 7.1.1
Release Date: 12 May 2006
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.1.1
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.15.7 i686
Current Operating System: Linux 2.6.17-10-generic #2 SMP Fri Oct 13 18:45:35
UTC 2006 i686
Build Date: 07 July 2006
Module Loader Present
log file: /var/log/Xorg.0.log
config file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf

************************************
After that, if I say 'OK' on that tab selectable option (only option), I get
back to previous message, select 'NO' and am back at black screen, with 'mount:
function not implemented'. Can type and characters appear on screen, but system
does not respond to any command.

I am running on an Acer Aspire 9500 laptop widescreen (17 inch), Celeron
M 380, 1.5 GB memory, Mobile Intel 915 GM/GMS 910 ML Express video.

This is off of the live CD regardless of Graphics safe mode or not. Was
able to run off of 6.06 ONLY in Graphics safe mode (thought it was my
screen/video card issue and not x or ? issue).

Have no log file or config file to attach.
