I ran "ltrace -p `pidof nm-applet` -ttt" just now for quite a while, and
it's mostly silent (no output for several seconds at a time), certainly
no gtk/gdk calls whilst nm-applet is sat in the background with no
interaction/network status changes taking place.
I can only conclude that this has been fixed somewhere along the way :-)
