the symptoms detailed by me show up when i boot the system in Ubuntu 8.04,1 , kernel 2.6.24.19. But when i select to boot in Ubuntu 8.04,1 , kernel 2.6.22.14 all the symptoms disappear. what is wrong with kernel 2.6.24.19

Back and Forward arrows are inactive (greyed).Clicking on QUIT icon LEADS to disappearing of all icons on bottom bar.
