If I understand it correctly, ubuntu devs will probably switch to libata for the next release. libata is a new framework for the ata drivers (both sata and pata), when you activate it, your devices will be renamed to /dev/sd* instead of /dev/hd* so using UUID instead of device name will make the transition not painful.
