Ubuntu better. It would help us greatly if you could test with the
current development version so we can work on getting it fixed in the
next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development

Also, instead of alsamixer, try right-clicking GNOME's volume mixer
applet -> Open Volume Control -> Edit -> Preferences. Can you enable
Mic Boost in there?
