If someone else runs into this bug, note that adding: Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
inside the "Device" section of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and then rebooting makes the system run just fine without any crashes (using XAA instead of EXA probably gives not so good gfx perf and I don't think you can run compiz with XAA).
