Sometimes, the volume control in Gnome shows a "disabled" icon, and I do
not get any sound output, nor can I adjust the volume.
The bug disappears if I delete and re-create the user's home directory.
In addition, it appears to be host-specific (if I log out and log into another
terminal client, the volume will sometimes work).
