I suspect this has to do with the extraordinarily long font names that
Ubuntu has by default - it tries to fit this into a fixed sized buffer
without any length checking.

If you have a launchpad account, you can hit
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linsmith/ and select
"Bugmail settings" to get any reports about linsmith automatically sent
to you. I guess upstream authors would ideally be added by default, or
at least invited, but it might be taken as spam. The Debian developers
I've interacted with usually encourage me to subscribe to their BTS when
it gets included into Debian.
