Reinstall with cleared profiles.ini and reboot gets a fully working
Thunderbird.  Changing the profile path in profiles.ini to the proper
absolute path *does* get me to where I want to be -- my profile set up
correctly, all my mail available, and I can send email.

I'm wondering -- was it the reboot that did it?  After the update this
morning there was a message saying that Firefox needed to be restarted,
but nothing about Thunderbird.  I restarted them both anyways, several
times.  Anyhow, I'm back to where I should be, but I am now unable to
test possible solutions to this problem.
