I don't think it is intended that it doesn't mount automatically. There is just some error in your fstab file. (I don't know why).
I suggest you post this problem on the forums. Mention the address of each partition (/dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, etc) and post your fstab file. I'm sure you'll get help on how to fix this problem there. I vaguely remember hearing about a GUI for editing fstab...
