Yes, it's the desktop CD. I guess the issue, then, is that it wasn't clear to me why the updates weren't working - Software Sources allowed me to add the CD as a repository but then didn't offer any reason as to why it wasn't working. Can there be something that either does not enable the user to add the CD as a repository, or so that it displays a message when the user tries to check for updates with the CD enabled as a repository (or, better, enabled as the _only_ repository)?
